「君の友だち」は、キャロル・キングの1971年のアルバム『つづれおり』に収録され、同じ年にはジェームス・テイラーにカバーされた。

1971年のアルバム『マッド・スライド・スリム』に収録されたテイラーのバージョンは、シングルとして成功しており、ビルボード・ホット100では1位を[1]、全英シングルチャートでは4位を記録している[2]。

また、テイラーのバージョンはイージー・リスニング・チャートで1位を記録している[3]。「君の友だち」によって、グラミー賞でテイラーは最優秀男性ポップボーカル賞、ソングライターのキングは最優秀楽曲賞を受賞している。

当時ジャクソンファイブのアイルビーゼアやサイモンとガーファンクルの明日に架ける橋など、よく似たコンセプトの曲がヒットしていました

どれも好きな曲ですが、この曲はジェームステイラーのバージョンが淡々と歌っていてオリジナルのキャロルキングのもののようにシャウトもせず返って心に染みる雰囲気で好きです
